National Libraries Week

In honor of National Libraries week, here is a sampling of what a library offers its community:

Because of a library people....

  • have free access to a dizzying amount of electronic and print resources.
  • get one on one help from information professionals to navigate those resources.
  • had Google long before the internet existed in the form of card catalogs (thank you, cataloguers).
  • can use a computer for free.
  • can learn how to do just about anything (such as setting up an e-mail address, writing a resume, studying for the SATs, learning about new government programs, etc.).
  • have a quiet space to work without the expectation of purchasing something.
  • have the opportunity to self educate.
  • participate in a range of all ages programming at no cost.
  • can learn about their community's history through the Archives.
  • have access to new technologies.
  • have an environment that fosters intellectual freedom and privacy.
  • get items delivered to them from other libraries via interlibrary loan.
  • gain information literacy skills.
  • don't have to click through useless search engine results thanks to reference librarians.
  • understand that correct citations matter.
  • have improved literacy rates.
  • have a repository of collective knowledge.

Thank you to libraries and their staff that do so much (often times with so little).
